"I have just returned from a month long family adventure in China!! While I was planning our trip I looked at the many family tour options that we have and decided that I would use Travel Indochina to put together our own pre-booked trip. It also allowed us to have tour days and "down" days. We loved our trip and having everything done ahead of time meant that we never had to worry and could fully enjoy our time there."

We started off with a week in Beijing, which has so much to offer. A full day at the Forbidden City was a highlight for our 8 year old daughter. We made sure we alternated - a day for us to see sights and then a day doing things that she would enjoy - like the Beijing Aquarium. Often the two things were the same - ie a day exploring the Hutongs in Beijing by rickshaw was something we wanted to do and she enjoyed it as well! Hiking the Great Wall was another must do and we were fortunate to be able to stay overnight in a traditional courtyard right at the wall.
From Beijing we took an overnight sleeper train to Xian and checked into our hotel for 3 nights. We had pre-arranged a tour guide for a full day at the Terracotta Warriors Museum and surrounding area - he was excellent in ensuring that he informed us of the history - plus he kept it interesting for our daughter. (He was also most helpful in getting us to a small medical clinic when we had a sudden dental emergency and helped translate for us).
After Xian we flew to Chengdu for three nights in this amazing city. I had arranged for a guide for the day who picked us up early and made sure that we were at the Panda Sanctuary in time to see the Pandas being fed. It was my daughter's pick of the trip to visit the Panda Sanctuary, she will never forget being able to touch and hold a one year old panda!
We then took the train from Chengdu to Chongqing to spend an afternoon looking at the city and board our boat for a Yangtze River Cruise. We did the 4 day, 3 night cruise and were on a 4 star boat which was very worth it! Our daughter loved the fact that there was a small pool on the rooftop which entertained her as we cruised along the river. She even managed to convince some of the staff to teach her how to play mahjong and was the fastest of the group of adults to memorize the chinese numbers and characters.
The cruise ended in Yichang with a trip through the locks of the Three Gorges Dam. We then had a transfer to Wuhan where we spent the night and then we took another overnight train to Guilin in the south of China. We had arranged for a day cruise down the Li River and then 5 nights in the smaller town of Yangshuo. This allowed us time to relax, enjoy the river, the smaller town life and we rented bicycles to explore the local countryside.
From Yangshuo we then headed back to Guilin to catch our final flight to Shanghai where we spent four nights. An evening acrobat show was the highlight for our daughter here - along with the Museum of History, the Bund, and Nathan Road.
For us - travelling in China was an amazing experience!! Having everything pre-planned was definitely a must as there are huge language barriers as well as regulations on who from and how you purchase things like rail tickets! Travelling with children can seem daunting before you have actually done it but we have always included our daughter in our travels. Travel is the best education for adults and kids alike.
