Mongolian Solar Eclipse 2008 (GAA) - 14 days

Special Departure: July 27th, 2008:

An incredible journey to the land of blue skies, green hills and nomadic people. A trip that takes you from the capital, Ulaan Baatar, to the vast countryside of endless steppes, lakes and deserts. This special departure combines the 2008 solar eclipse with a land of timeless beauty. A once in a lifetime event!

Itinerary

Day: Description:
1 Arrive Ulaan Baatar
2-3 Ulaan Baatar
The capital, Ulaan Baatar, is a city in which new meets old as Mongolians in traditional dress mingle with the nation's business elite. The nation's close relationship with the old Soviet Union is evident in the Soviet style architecture and the old Russian cars. Exploring the city's many museums is a real eye-opener into a turbulent history including the time of that most famous of Mongolia's historical figures, the feared and respected ruler, Ghengis Khan.
4 - 6 Eclipse Camp
Travel through the mountains to western Mongolia where we will be based for the solar eclipse on August 1. Explore the surrounding countryside and petroglyph sites as we set up camp near the pristine valley near Hoton Lake. Situated at 6,700 ft above sea level, this area has pristine weather and offers the best conditions for viewing the solar eclipse. According to scientists, the 2008 eclipse will last for just over 2 minutes.
7-12 Gobi Desert
After the eclipse, explore the remote lands of Mongolia with a visit to the Gobi Desert. The Gobi Desert holds many treasures, from stunning landscapes to some of the world’s most famous fossil sites. Explore on foot or by Bactrian camel at the legendary “Flaming Cliffs” where in 1922 explorer Roy Chapman Andrews made his spectacular finds of dinosaur fossils, visit Yol Valley National Park, habitat for Altai snowcocks, ibex, and Argali mountain sheep, and see the towering dunes of the Gobi.
13 Ulaan Baatar
Return to Ulaan Baatar for some last minute sightseeing.
14 Depart Ulaan Baatar
