FAQs
What is Adventure Travel?
Adventure means something different to everyone.
It could be a camping safari in Kenya or mountain trekking in Nepal. Maybe it's haggling in a Hong Kong market or finding that perfect beach in Sydney. Perhaps it could even be taking yoga lessons in India, language lessons in Peru or cycling in Bali. It's not doing the same old vacation year after year and being open to "Experience, Discover & Explore".
Is it better to do a tour or to travel independently?
Do you head out on your own? Or do you join a group?
One isn't superior to the other and one isn't more (or less) expensive than the other.
Ultimately, this is a choice that’ll come down to personal preference.
Travelling independently is a good choice if you’re happy being by yourself and you value a high degree of flexibility and customization.
Group trips can range from a few weeks to many months. They offer in-depth exploration and are led by experienced guides. These trips have a set itinerary but usually incorporate enough free time to do
things on your own. If you want less hassle and want to let someone else do the planning and deal with all the particulars; you value an experienced guide; you like to be with people; your destination is high risk; you want to pay for most of your travel in advance – then group travel is the choice for you.
How fit do I have to be to do an Adventure Tour?
It depends on the type of trip you want to take. Some trips, such as a trek to Everest Base Camp or the ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro, are classified as strenuous and should only be undertaken by those with plenty of hill walking experience and an above average level of fitness. However, the vast majority are well within the capability of any healthy individual leading a normal, active life.
What is the average age on an Adventure Tour?
The age of people that decide to do an Adventure Trip can be varied. From early 20's to late 70's, people that do these tours all share a sense of adventure and wonder for the world around them.
What is the average group size on a tour?
The Adventure Travel Co. recommends small group tours (usually 12 to 16 people). Small group travel allows for flexibility and informality and allow you to share great company without crowding your experience.

Do I have to pay more as a single traveler?
Most Adventure Trips do not have a single supplement. This means that the accommodation is on a twin share basis and, if you are travelling on your own, you will be sharing a room with another traveller of the same sex. Some tours have an optional single supplement if you prefer to have your own room.
If I book a tour, is it guaranteed to run?
Most tours require a minimum number of participants to run. If the minimum number has not been reached then the tour may be cancelled. Talk to your Adventure Travel Co. agent to see if the tour you are looking at is a "guaranteed departure" or not.
What is a local payment?
The local payment is a portion of the tour cost paid to your group leader at the start of your tour rather than being paid in advance. This Local Payment is put towards local expenses, such as arranging internal flights, and reduces the need to transfer funds.
What VISA’s will I need?
Your Adventure Travel Co. agent can help you find out which countries you are visiting require an entry visa.
What is the best way to take money with me?
Cash, travellers cheques, or credit cards… that is the question! The safest way to carry money with you is in the form of travellers cheques; however, many people have said they wished they had brought more cash with them because of the difficulty in cashing travellers cheques in remote areas etc. We recommend a combination of the two – half cash and half travellers cheques. As a general rule, American Dollars are accepted throughout the world, but make sure you have small denomination bills, and that they are not ripped or marked, as this may affect your ability to change them.
The rapid emergence of ATMs in capital cities around the world means that you can now withdraw money from your saving, checking, Visa or MasterCard accounts. We advise that you do not rely solely on this form of obtaining funds, as there will not always be an ATM handy.
