Passports & Visas
Passports
If you're getting a passport for the first time, complete the following steps at least two months before your trip. Be prepared to spend around $100 and fill out a passport application form. The application can be obtained:
- By downloading a form from Passport Canada's website www.passportcanada.gc.ca;
- By picking up an application form in person at a Passport Canada service location, Service Canada centre or Canada Post outlet; or
- By using Passport On-line, available at www.passportcanada.gc.ca. This service is only available to Canadians 16 years of age or older.
You will need the following:
- proof of citizenship, such as birth certificate or citizenship certificate,
- photo identification to support your identity,
- two photographs – one signed by a guarantor, and
- the appropriate application fee
You will have to pay more to have your passport application expedited.
Visas
In many cases, a visa is required to stay in a foreign country for an extended period of time. Visas can take a long time to be processed, so you want to be sure to send in your application early. It is not unknown for the applicant to have to travel to the nearest consulate office to get the visa; this may be in another city. You are responsible for getting information regarding visas and it is best to contact the nearest embassy or consulate office of the country you plan on visiting. While you’re at it, now is the time to find out if you need immunizations in order to travel.
