Tour: Tibet Experience - TIC
Duration: 12 days
Cost: From $2,985 USD

This is a spectacular journey into Tibet that takes in the highlights and complex histories of the local people, the cities, sights and monasteries, as well as the awesome high-altitude scenery for which Tibet is famous – from snowcapped mountains to deep valleys, azure skies, gushing rivers, turquoise lakes and rolling plateaus. This is a truly awesome journey into one of the wildest and most beautiful regions in China.

Day: Description:
1-2 Chengdu
We begin our journey to Tibet in Chengdu, capital of China’s western province of Sichuan, just a short flight away from Lhasa. On arrival in Chengdu we transfer to our hotel and meet our fellow travelers and tour leader for a briefing over drinks. Before heading to Tibet, we take a day to explore the delights of this very different Chinese city and enjoy its parks, poetry and bustling teahouses. Visit the fascinating Giant Panda Research and Breeding Base outside of Chengdu to learn more about these amazing endangered animals and the programs that are being implemented to protect them and their natural habitat, and have the chance to enjoy the spicy dishes and hotpots for which Sichuan Province is so famous.
3-6 Lhasa
We begin our journey to Tibet with an early morning flight across the snowcapped Himalayas to the spectacular high-altitude city of Lhasa – the heart and soul of Tibet. This city is a feast for the senses and we spend the next four days immersed in the wonderful sights and history of this region. We visit Jokhang Temple on the Barkhor Circuit, one of the most powerful spiritual centers on earth. Visit the former residence of the Dalai Lama – the imposing Potala Palace. We explore some of the largest and most impressive monasteries in Tibet – Sera and Drepung. We also take time to embark on a back streets walking tour of Lhasa’s Tibetan Quarter, explore the treasures of Tibet Museum, and take in views over the Lhasa Valley from a hilltop at Pawang Ka.
7-8 Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse & Shigatse
We leave Lhasa this morning and head south into the Tibetan countryside on a day’s journey covering two spectacular high-altitude passes. We stop to take in sweeping views over turquoise Yamdrok Lake before continuing on to Gyantse, home of the magnificent Kumbum. The Kumbum, a true architectural wonder and nearly 600 years old, is Tibet’s largest stupa and houses a treasure of ancient murals and sculptures. We take time to explore these and the delights of Beichu Monastery before continuing to Tibet’s second largest town, Shigatse. Shigatse is traditionally the seat of the Panchen Lama, based in the imposing Tashilunpo Monastery. We explore the ancient buildings and alleyways of this huge complex before heading into the Tibetan Old Quarter for a short walking tour of back streets and local markets.
9-10 Shigatse
We take a long drive through the spectacular scenery of Yarlung Valley to the town of Tsedang. From here we catch a local ferry across the Brahmaputra River to Samye Monastery and experience some beautiful views over the surrounding mountains. Samye Monastery’s significance as Tibet’s very first monastery makes it a fascinating place to visit, and we take time to explore its unique design and history. From Tsedang we also visit the remarkable fortress of Yumbulagang, an isolated building perched on a hilltop, rich in Tibetan legend.
11-12 Chengdu
From Tsedang we return to Lhasa airport for our flight back to Chengdu. Back in Sichuan, we say goodbye to our group and celebrate the end of an incredible journey over a farewell dinner. Our Tibet Experience ends with an airport transfer on day 12.
