Itinerary

Day: Description:
1-2 DELHI:
Delhi, India's capital, is a lively, colourful city and a fantastic introduction to the country. See some of modern Delhi including India Gate and the Gandhi Memorial. Soak up Delhi’s ancient history at the impressive Jama Masjid and Red Fort. Finally, board a traditional rickshaw and explore the narrow lanes of Old Delhi, with crowded shop fronts and masses of people – every photographer's dream.
3 VARANASI:
Today we fly to Varanasi, reputedly one of the world's oldest cities and one of Hinduis'’s holiest sites. Visit nearby Sarnath, the ancient birthplace of Buddhism. Back in Varanasi observe a sunset Hindu aarthi ceremony on the banks of Mother Ganges. Rise at dawn to witness pilgrims washing themselves in the holy river before exploring the narrow lanes of the old town, where we mix with Varanasi’s colourful sadhus, or holy men, and pilgrims.
4-7 KHAJURAHO & BANDHAVGARH:
Take a short flight to Khajuraho, home to an exquisite and fascinating temple complex. Despite being over a thousand years old, the ornate carvings have been exceptionally well-preserved in all their risqué glory! Erotic carvings depict scenes from the Kama Sutra, while other towers depict Hindu epics, battles and scenes from the royal courts. Continue by road to the beautiful Bandhavgarh National Park, home to a diverse range of animals, including deer, monkeys, bears, leopards and even tigers. Stay in an atmospheric luxury camp on the forest edge, our base for jungle safaris. Leaving Bandhavgarh, we take an exciting overnight train journey to Agra.
8 AGRA & TAJ MAHAL:
After an early morning arrival in Agra we have some free time to freshen up before an afternoon exploration of the town. Visit Agra’s Red Fort and learn how families create the unique marble inlay craftsmanship which makes the Taj so beautiful.
9-10 JAIPUR:
Rise early this morning to witness sunrise over the Taj Mahal, surely one of the world’s most breathtaking architectural feats. Visit the abandoned royal ruins of Fatehpur Sikri en route to Jaipur. Explore the atmospheric 'Pink City' of Jaipur, including the Palace of Winds, the observatory, City Palace and the ancient beauty of dramatic Amber Fort. This fort is one of Jaipur's most famous sites and is home to a fascinating history. Enjoy some free time to explore Jaipur, and perhaps purchase some Rajasthani handicrafts.
11-13 PUSHKAR & JODHPUR:
Head to the holy lakeside city of Pushkar with its unique temple dedicated to Brahma and a site of pilgrimage for the colourful sadhus. Continue on to Jodhpur, one of Rajasthan’s most important cities, and explore the impressive Meherangarh Fort. The fascinating museum there houses the Maharajah’s collection of palanquins and other fine artefacts, such as Rajput armour. Explore Jodhpur's lively bazaar before heading to the former royal residence of Rohetgarh for a fun Indian cooking class.
14-17 JOJAWAR & UDAIPUR:
Drive to Jojawar Village and check in to Rawla Jojawar, an atmospheric royal residence still managed by descendants of the royal family. This afternoon enjoy a unique train safari as we climb into beautiful hills past villages and troops of monkeys. The following morning we visit a camp of the Rebari people, nomads famed for their camelraising skills. Continue on to Udaipur via the ornate Jain temples at Ranakpur. We end our journey in the romantic lake city of Udaipur, the perfect base from which to explore Lake Pichola, the imposing City Palace and enjoy some final free time for shopping in the narrow streets of Udaipur’s old town. Our exploration of Ancient India ends with an airport transfer on day 17.
