Outback Larapinta Trek (GAA) – 8 Days from $1,655 USD

The Larapinta Trail is fast becoming one of Australia’s greatest trekking destinations – for good reason. With spectacular views that anyone would love, this is a perfect adventure for outdoor lovers. Averaging 12-18km of graded trail per day, there is still plenty of time to relax and enjoy the Australian Outback.

Itinerary

Day: Description:
1 Alice Springs:
Arrive in Alice Springs at any time.
2 Wallaby Gap:
Start the day with a short drive to Old Alice Springs Telegraph Station, which marks the beginning of the Larapinta Trail. The trail initially winds among boulders of Alice Springs granite, then passes through witchetty bush and mulga scrub, and over exposed hills and shady woodlands. Finally, you arrive at the deep narrow passage of Wallaby Gap and your camp.
3 Serpentine Gorge:
Walk through the vertical-spined dolomite country of the Bitter Springs formation. These 800 million year old rocks contain fossilized stromatolites, the cyanobacteria that were amongst the first life on earth. Next, hike into Serpentine Gorge and set up camp. Relax or wander at leisure around the hills of your campsite and really enjoy being in the Red Centre.
4 Serpentine Chalet:
Walk the ridge of the gorge to Count’s Point, where the 4 highest peaks west of The Great Dividing Range can be seen. This is also the place where you can see the comet impact crater, Gosse Bluff, a feature of the landscape for the next few days. The descent to Ormiston Gorge is through an old stand of fire sensitive Hill Mulga, which has amazingly survived a recent bout of bush fires.
5 Finke River Camp:
A shorter part of the trek leading into the head of the Finke River is where this trail gets its name; Lhere Pinte means salty river. Enjoy an afternoon resting in camp with an option for an evening walk to Glen Helen, where there is the opportunity for a worthwhile "remote" beer.
6 Mount Sonder:
This morning you are up early for your ascent of Mount Sonder (known as the "pregnant lady" by the local Anangu Aboriginal people). An early start allows you to climb in the cool morning air, before the sun heats up the landscape. Climb one of the highest peaks west of the Great Dividing Range and marvel at the unbelievable scenery.
7 Ormiston Pound:
The Ormiston Pound offers some extraordinary scenery and wildlife. Your final walk explores the upper reaches of the Gorge, with a chance to see the many rock wallabies as they scamper about the imposing cliffs. Having explored the highlights of the Larapinta Trail, we drive back in to Alice Springs and enjoy one last night as a group.
8 Depart Alice Springs:
